In mythological accounts, she bore numerous monstrous children with Phorcys, who was also an offspring of Gaia and Pontus.

The name has been utilized in astronomy to designate specific celestial bodies. The small Solar System body 65489 Ceto is named in her honor, while its satellite is named after Phorcys.
