Sanremo, also spelled San Remo in English and formerly in Italian, is a comune located on the Mediterranean coast of Liguria in northwestern Italy. Founded during Roman times, the municipality currently has a population of approximately 53,000 residents.
The city is a well-known tourist destination situated on the Italian Riviera. It serves as a prominent venue for various cultural and sporting events, most notably hosting the Sanremo Music Festival and the Milan–San Remo cycling classic. Additionally, the town is historically significant as the place where 20th-century Italian literary figure Italo Calvino spent his formative years.
