Ischia is a volcanic island located in the Tyrrhenian Sea at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples. Situated approximately 30 kilometres from the city of Naples, it is recognized as the largest of the Phlegrean Islands.
The island has been inhabited since the Bronze Age and was established as a Greek emporium during the 8th or 9th century BCE. During this period, it was known by the name Pithekoūsai.
