Ercolano is a town and comune located in the Metropolitan City of Naples within the Campania region of Southern Italy. Situated on the Bay of Naples just southeast of the city of Naples, it lies at the western foot of Mount Vesuvius.
The town's name is derived from the ancient city of Herculaneum, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The medieval town of Resina was constructed on the resulting volcanic material and eventually became Ercolano. Today, the area serves as a resort and a primary starting point for excursions to the excavations of Herculaneum and for bus trips to ascend Mount Vesuvius.
The local economy includes the manufacture of glass, buttons, and leather goods. Additionally, the region is known for producing Lacryma Christi, a wine also referred to as "Tears of Christ."
