Scilla is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants belonging to the family Asparagaceae, specifically within the subfamily Scilloideae. The genus comprises approximately 30 to 80 different species characterized by their bulb-forming nature.
Native to woodlands, seashores, and subalpine meadows across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, several species have also become naturalized in North America and Australasia. While most Scilla species bloom in early spring, some varieties flower in the autumn. The flowers are typically blue, though white, pink, and purple types also exist.
Due to their aesthetic qualities, various species within the genus are commonly utilized as ornamental garden plants. In English, these plants are sometimes referred to as squills.
