Hofsós is a small village located in the Northern Region of Iceland. It serves as one of the oldest trading ports in northern Iceland, with historical roots dating back to the 16th century.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Hofsós functioned as a busy trading post for the Danish Trade Monopoly. Despite possessing several historical prerequisites for urban growth—including its central regional location, proximity to fishing grounds, and a suitable landing spot for boats—the village did not develop into a larger town during the 20th century.
The area contains notable historical sites, such as the Hofsós warehouse built in 1777, which currently houses the Drangey Exhibition. Additionally, the Massacre hill farm (Mannskaðaholl) is situated at the south end of Lake Höfðavatn and is named for a 1431 massacre of English marauders.
