Mashhad is a major city in northeastern Iran, situated approximately 740 kilometres east of the capital, Tehran. It serves as the capital of Razavi Khorasan province, as well as the county and district of the same name. Historically, the city has been known by various names, including Mashad, Meshhed, and Meshed.

As the second-most populous city in Iran, Mashhad has a population of about 3,400,000 people. This population figure encompasses the areas of Mashhad, Taman, and Torqabeh within the Central District of Mashhad County.
