Herat, also historically known as Haraiva, Horeiva, and Hires, is a city located in western Afghanistan. It serves as the capital and largest city of Herat Province and has long been recognized as the third-largest city in Afghanistan.
The city is situated within the jurisdiction of the Herat District and has an estimated population of 673,273 settled residents. The current mayor of the city is Mullah Nematullah Hassan, who succeeded Haji Abdulraziq Rashed.
