Alvand is a subrange of the Zagros Mountains located in western Iran. It is situated approximately 10 km south of the city of Hamadan within the Hamadan province. The range reaches a summit elevation of 3,580 m (11,750 ft).
The main body of the Alvand range extends roughly 50 km from east to west with a maximum north–south width of about 30 km. Formed during the late Jurassic and early Cretaceous as part of the Zagros orogeny, the mountains rise sharply from the surrounding plains and feature numerous deep valleys. The geological composition of the mountains consists primarily of intrusive rocks, specifically granite and diorite.
