Shahrud

Iran

Shahrud is a city located in Iran. While it serves as a geographical location, the name is also associated with a specific musical instrument of historical significance.

The Shahrud was a short-necked lute that appeared in illustrations such as the Surname-i Hümayun. It resembled an oud or barbat but was distinguished by its much larger size. This increased scale provided the instrument with added resonance and a deeper bass range, comparable to modern instruments like the mandobass, mandolone, or Algerian mandole.
