Kargil, also known as Kargyil, is a city located in Indian-administered Ladakh within the disputed Kashmir region. It serves as the joint capital of the union territory of Ladakh and functions as the headquarters for the Kargil district. As an urban center, it ranks as the second-largest city in Ladakh, following Leh.
The city is situated on the banks of the Suru River near its confluence with the Wakha Rong River. Geographically, it is positioned approximately 204 kilometres east of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir and 234 kilometres west of Leh. The Wakha Rong River provides one of the primary accessible routes to the city of Leh.
