Warangal, also known as Orugallu, is a city located in the Indian state of Telangana. It serves as the district headquarters of the Warangal district and is recognized as the second largest city in the state. According to the 2011 Census of India, the city has a population of 811,844 and covers an area of approximately 406 km2.
Historically, Warangal served as the capital of the Kakatiya dynasty, which was established in 1163. The city is noted for its cultural significance as the cultural capital of Telangana. It features numerous monuments left by the Kakatiyas, including fortresses, lakes, temples, and stone gateways, which have made the area a popular tourist destination.
One of the most notable landmarks in the region is the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam, a stone gateway that was officially included in the emblem of Telangana by the state government.
