Karimnagar, formerly known as Elagandula, is a city and District Headquarters located in the Indian state of Telangana. Situated on the banks of the Manair River, which is a tributary of the Godavari River, it serves as a major urban agglomeration and the Municipal Corporation headquarters for the Karimnagar district.
The city is recognized as the fourth largest in Telangana, following Hyderabad, Warangal, and Nizamabad. According to the 2011 census, it was the third largest and fastest-growing urban settlement in the state, recording a population growth rate of 45.46% between 1991 and 2011. It functions as a significant educational and health hub for the northern districts of Telangana.
Karimnagar is a prominent business center known primarily for its agricultural and granite industries. Due to its significance in the stone industry, it has earned the nickname "City of Granites."
