A mango is an edible stone fruit produced by the tropical tree Mangifera indica. The species originated in the northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent, specifically within the regions that currently comprise Bangladesh, northeastern India, and Myanmar.
The M. indica tree has been cultivated throughout South and Southeast Asia since ancient times. This long history of cultivation has resulted in two distinct modern mango cultivar lineages: the "Indian" type and the "Southeast Asian" type. While M. indica is the primary source of the fruit, other species within the genus Mangifera also produce edible fruits known as mangoes, primarily located in the Malesian ecoregion.
