Khunti is the headquarters of Khunti district, located in the Indian state of Jharkhand. It is situated within the South Chotanagpur division and serves as one of the 24 districts in the state. The district was officially established on September 12, 2007, having been carved out of the Ranchi district.
Historically, Khunti is recognized as a center of activity for the Birsa movement. Geographically and sociopolitically, the district is noted for being part of the Red Corridor. As of the 2011 census, it ranked as the second least populous district in Jharkhand, following Lohardaga.
