Arang, also known as "The town of temples," is a block and Nagar Palika located in the Raipur District of Chhattisgarh, India. It is situated near the eastern limits of Raipur City and in close proximity to Mahasamund City. The town is recognized as an ancient settlement that was historically ruled by the Haihayas Rajput dynasty.
The area is primarily known for its numerous Hindu and Jain temples dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, including the Mand Deval Jain temple, the Mahamaya temple, the Panchmukhi temple, and the Hanuman temple. Archaeological evidence, specifically a copper plate inscription from the Gupta Empire known as the Arang Plate of Bhimasena II, establishes the town's long history as a religious center under Hindu rule.
The Mand Deval Jain temple is considered the most ancient structure in the area, dating to the 11th century. Its sanctum sanctorum houses three large images of Digambara tirthankaras carved from polished black stone.
