Akaltara is a nagar palika and tehsil located in the Janjgir-Champa district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The town falls under the jurisdiction of the Janjgir Parliamentary seat.
The region is notable as the birthplace of Thakur Chhedi Lal (Barrister), a prominent freedom fighter. Politically, Akaltara has a representative in the Chhattisgarh State Legislative Assembly, currently held by Raghavendra Singh Sisodiya of the Congress party.
