Mathura is a city and the administrative headquarters of the Mathura district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated approximately 162 kilometres (101 mi) south-east of Delhi and about 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from the town of Vrindavan.
Historically, Mathura served as an economic hub due to its location at the junction of several important caravan routes. According to the 2011 Census of India, the city had an estimated population of 441,894.
