The name "Vidisha" originates from the nearby river Bais, which is mentioned in the Puranas. The city holds significant historical and religious importance; it is a recognized Jain pilgrimage center and features in the ancient epic Ramayana. According to these records, the area was ruled by Shatrughna, the youngest brother of Rama, and later by his younger son, Shatrughati.
