Tikamgarh is a town and tehsil located in the Tikamgarh district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the district.
Historically, the city was originally known as Tehri, which consisted of three hamlets arranged in a triangular shape; a locality within the current city still retains the name Purani Tehri. Until 1947, Tikamgarh was part of the kingdom of Orchha, which was established in the 16th century by Bundeli chief Rudra Pratap Singh.
In 1783, the capital of the state was moved from Orchha to Tehri. The town eventually adopted the name Tikamgarh after the fort located there. Additionally, the surrounding district is known for the old Garh Kundar fort, which served as the capital for Khangar rulers between 1180 and 1347.
