Garot (Korean: 갈옷) or galjungi (갈중이) is a traditional variety of hanbok, the traditional clothing of Korea. It has historically served as both everyday dress and working clothes for the local inhabitants of Jeju Island.
The garment is characterized by its distinct dyeing process involving persimmons. The name "garot" is derived from the Korean words "gal" (from gam, meaning persimmon) and "ot," which means clothes. It is believed that Jeju farmers and fishermen began dyeing cotton with unripe persimmons because they observed that persimmon-dyed fishing lines were significantly stronger than undyed ones.
