Gangtok is the capital and most populous city of the Indian state of Sikkim. Located in the eastern Himalayan range at an elevation of 1,650 meters (5,410 feet), it serves as the seat of the eponymous district.
The city has a population of approximately 100,000 people, composed of three primary Sikkimese ethnicities—the Bhutias, Lepchas, and Indian Gorkhas—alongside residents from other Indian states. Due to its year-round mild temperate climate and proximity to high Himalayan peaks, Gangtok is positioned at the center of Sikkim's tourism industry.
