During the 18th century, the town was a prosperous and cosmopolitan center that served as the capital of the Bengal Subah for seventy years. It was home to wealthy merchant and banking families from across the Indian subcontinent and Eurasia, making it a significant hub for international trade. Various European entities, including the British, French, Dutch, and Danish East India Companies, operated factories and conducted business within the city.
In addition to its commercial importance, Murshidabad was recognized as a prominent center of art and culture during its period of prominence.
