Howrah is a city located in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is situated on the western bank of the Hooghly River, directly opposite its twin city, Kolkata. Administratively, the city lies within the Howrah district and serves as the headquarters for the Howrah Sadar subdivision.
The city is governed by the Howrah Municipal Corporation and is included in the area covered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). It functions as a major industrial and transportation hub, serving as a primary gateway to Kolkata through the Howrah Bridge and the Howrah railway station.
