Tiruchirappalli, also known as Trichy or historically as Trichinopoly, is a major tier II city located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It serves as the administrative headquarters of the Tiruchirappalli district and is situated almost at the geographic center of the state, approximately 322 kilometres south of Chennai and 374 kilometres north of Kanyakumari.
The city occupies an area of 167.23 square kilometres and was recorded with a population of 916,857 in 2011. It is the fourth largest urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu and has been recognized as the state's most livable and cleanest city, as well as the fifth safest city for women in India.
Geographically, the Cauvery Delta begins 16 kilometres west of the city where the Kaveri river splits into two. This split forms the island of Srirangam, which is currently incorporated into the Tiruchirappalli City Municipal Corporation.
