Tharangambadi, historically known as Tranquebar, is a coastal town located in the Mayiladuthurai district of Tamil Nadu, India. Situated on the Coromandel Coast, it lies approximately 15 kilometres north of Karaikal near the mouth of the Uppanar distributary of the Kaveri River.
The town was established as the first Danish trading post in India on November 19, 1620. The settlement was founded following contact between King Christian IV's envoy, Ove Gjedde, and Raghunatha Nayak of Thanjavur. During its period of Danish rule, an annual tribute was paid to the Rajah of Tanjore until the colony was sold to the British East India Company in 1845.
