Madurai is a major tier II city located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It serves as the cultural capital of the state and functions as the administrative headquarters for the Madurai district, which has been governed by the Madurai Municipal Corporation since November 1, 1866.
Situated on the banks of the Vaigai River, the city has a documented history spanning more than 2,500 years. According to the 2011 census, it ranks as the third largest metropolis in Tamil Nadu and the 27th largest urban agglomeration in India. Madurai is frequently referred to by the name "Thoongaa Nagaram," which translates to "the city that never sleeps."
