Ambur is a city located in the Tirupathur district of the Vellore region in Tamil Nadu, India. It is situated on the banks of the Palar River, positioned geographically between the cities of Chennai and Bangalore.
The city is notable for its sizeable leather industry and its local culinary specialties, which include spicy biryani and a sweet known as makkhenpeda. Historically, Ambur served as the site of two significant military actions during the 18th century. These included the 1749 Battle of Ambur, which initiated the Second Carnatic War between the Arcot State and the Mughal Empire, and the 1767 siege of Ambur during the First Anglo-Mysore War.
During the 1767 siege, local troops and British forces successfully defended the city against an attack launched by the Kingdom of Mysore and the Hyderabad State. These events established the city's historical significance within the military history of the region.
