Udaipur is a city located in the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan, situated approximately 415 km (258 mi) south of the state capital, Jaipur. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the Udaipur district and is historically recognized as the capital of the kingdom of Mewar within the former Rajputana Agency.
The city was founded in 1559 by Udai Singh II of the Sisodia clan of Rajputs, who moved the capital from Chittorgarh following a siege by Akbar. It remained the capital until 1818, when Mewar became a British princely state. Following India's independence in 1947, the Mewar province became part of Rajasthan.
Udaipur is widely known as the City of Lakes because it is surrounded by five major artificial lakes.
