Jodhpur is a city located in the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan. It serves as the administrative headquarters for both the Jodhpur district and the Jodhpur division. As of 2025, the city has a population of approximately 1.6 million people.
Founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, a Rajput chief of the Rathore clan, the city is the historic capital of the Kingdom of Marwar. It became part of the state of Rajasthan on March 30, 1949, following the merger of various erstwhile Rajputana states. The city's integration into the Union of India occurred on August 11, 1947, when Maharaja Hanwant Singh signed the Instrument of Accession.
