Sri Muktsar Sahib, commonly known as Muktsar, is a historical city and district headquarters located in the state of Punjab, India. According to the 2011 census, the municipality has a population of 117,085, ranking it as the 14th largest city in Punjab by population.
The city was originally known as Khidrana or Khidrane di dhab before being renamed Muktsar following the Battle of Muktsar in 1705. It became a district headquarters in 1995, and while the government officially changed its name to Sri Muktsar Sahib in 2012, it remains primarily referred to by its unofficial name.
The district holds historical significance for the Sikh faith as it is the birthplace of Guru Angad, the second Guru of the Sikhs, who was born in the village of Matte-di-Sarai (Sarainaga) within the same district.
