Patnagarh is a town and Notified Area Council located in the Bolangir district of the Indian state of Odisha. While its original name is Patnāgarh, it is commonly pronounced verbally as Patnāgad. The official language spoken in the region is Odia.
The town holds historical significance as a former epicenter of power during the Middle Ages, serving as the capital of 18 garhs under south Koshal. According to recorded history, the progenies of the Delhi King Prithviraj Chauhan settled in Patnagarh in the 12th century AD following his defeat by Mohammad Ghori in the second battle of Tarai in 1193. Ramai Deo is identified as the first child of the royal scion to rule the area.
The city's prominence declined after the 16th century with the emergence of Balangir and Sambalpur. Today, it remains a site of historical interest within the Odisha region.
