The town is an agro-industrial hub frequently referred to as the "rice bowl of Odisha" due to its significant rice production. It is also known as the "city of handloom," serving as the place of origin for the sambalpuri sari.
Bargarh is home to the world-famous festival known as Dhanu jatra, which is described as the world's largest open-air theater.
