Ullal, also known as Uḷḷāla, is a city located in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka state, India. It is recognized as one of the oldest towns in the country and possesses a history dating back to at least the 15th century, during which it fell under Portuguese rule. Historical remnants of this period can still be observed along its beaches and throughout various parts of the city.
The Ullal City Municipal Council forms part of the continuous Mangaluru urban agglomeration area, which ranks as the fourth largest in Karnataka following Bengaluru, Mysore, and Hubli-Dharwad. There are ongoing plans to merge the Ullal City Municipality with several gram panchayats and the Mangaluru City Corporation to establish a Greater Mangalore region.
The city is notable for several historic landmarks and cultural sites, including the Sri Cheerumba Bagavathi Temple, Someshwara Temple, and Queen Abbakka Chowta's Fort at Ranipura. Other significant locations include Someshwar Beach, Summer Sands Beach Resort, St. Sebastian Church Permannur, and the K Pandyarajah Ballal Institutes. The area is also home to industrial sites such as a Fish Meal & Oil Plant.
