Koppal, also known as Koppala, is the district headquarters of the Koppal district in the northern part of the Indian state of Karnataka. The town was established as a separate district on April 1, 1998, having been carved out of the Raichur district. Geographically, the city is characterized by being surrounded on three sides by hills.
Historically referred to as Kopana Nagara and Jaina Kashi, the town was considered a sacred site for Jains due to its historical presence of more than 700 Basadis, which are Jain meditation halls. Notable historical landmarks within the area include the Koppal Fort, Gavimath, and the Male Mallappa Temple.
Major tourist attractions associated with the region include the Krishnadevaraya Tomb, Anjanadri Parvata, Huligamma Temple, and Pampa Sarovara.
