Hosapete, also known as Hospet, is a major city and district headquarters located in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka, India. Situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, it serves as a significant connecting link between North and South Karnataka. The city was founded by the Vijayanagara ruler Krishna Deva Raya in honor of his mother, Nagamma.
Known as "the steel city of Karnataka," Hosapete is a fast-growing industrial and commercial hub with economies rooted in mining, steel production, agriculture, and tourism. It is connected to major rail and road networks, including the Hospet Junction railway station and National Highway 50. The city is also recognized for its proximity to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi, located approximately 13 km away.
The region features notable landmarks such as the Tungabhadra Dam and Anjanadri Hill. Due to rapid urban development and industrial growth, which includes nearby zones like JSW Steel at Toranagallu, the city is currently governed by a City Municipal Council with plans for future upgrade to a Mahanagara Palike.
