Belagavi, officially known as Belgaum, is a city located in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is situated near the state's northern western border within the Western Ghats region.
The city serves as the administrative headquarters for both the Belgavi district and the eponymous Belgavi division. Due to its administrative significance, the Government of Karnataka has proposed establishing Belagavi as the state's second capital alongside Bangalore. In support of this initiative, a second state administrative building, the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, was inaugurated on October 11, 2012.
