Badami, formerly known as Vātāpi, is a town and the headquarters of the Badami taluk located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. The site served as the regal capital of the Badami Chalukyas from 540 to 757.
The town is situated in a ravine at the foot of a rugged red sandstone outcrop that surrounds Agastya lake. It is well known for its historical rock-cut monuments, specifically the Badami cave temples, as well as various structural temples including the Bhutanatha temples, Badami Shivalaya, and Jambulingesvara Temple.
