Ampati is a city in northeast India that serves as the district headquarters of South West Garo Hills, located within the state of Meghalaya. Geographically situated at latitude 25º27.505 and longitude 089º56.456, it lies approximately 52 kilometers from Tura, the headquarters of the neighboring West Garo Hills district.
The region is primarily inhabited by the Garos in the hill areas, while the foothills are home to Hajongs and Koches, with the Hajong being the second largest ethnicity in the area. The district shares an international boundary with Bangladesh on its south and western sides, encompassing approximately 35 kilometers of border territory. It also borders the South Salmara district of Assam.
Due to its proximity to the international frontier, nearly one-third of the total number of villages in the South West Garo Hills district are officially designated as border villages by the Border Area Development Department.
