Imphal is the capital city of the Indian state of Manipur. It is a major commercial hub spread across parts of the districts of Imphal West and Imphal East, with the former district containing the majority of the city's population and area.
The metropolitan center of the city features the ruins of Kangla Palace, which served as the royal seat of the former Kingdom of Manipur and is surrounded by a moat. The region is known for its cottage industries, specifically weaving, brass-ware, and bronze-ware.
Imphal is part of the Smart Cities Mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The Imphal dialect serves as the standard dialect of the Meitei language, which is officially known as Manipuri and is natively used in the region.
