Ahilyanagar, officially known as Ahmednagar, is a city located in the state of Maharashtra, India. It serves as the headquarters of the Ahmednagar district.
The city contains several dozen buildings and sites dating back to the Nizam Shahi period. A notable landmark is the Ahmednagar Fort, which was historically considered almost impregnable. During the British era, the fort was used as a detention center for Indian Nationalists, including Jawaharlal Nehru, who wrote "The Discovery of India" while confined there in 1944. Some rooms within the fort have since been converted into a museum.
Ahilyanagar is also a significant site for military infrastructure and training. It houses the Indian Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S), which provides training and recruitment for the Indian Army Armoured Corps, as well as the Mechanised Infantry Regimental Centre (MIRC), the Vehicle Research and Development Establishment (VRDE), and the Controllerate of Quality Assurance Vehicles (CQAV).
