Beypore, also known as Beypur, is a port town located in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India. It is situated opposite Chaliyam at the estuary where the river Chaliyar meets the Arabian Sea and is currently part of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation. Historically, the town has been referred to by several names, including Vaypura, Vadaparappanad, Beydary, and Sultan Pattanam, the latter name given by Tipu Sultan.
The town is recognized for its historical significance as one of Kerala's oldest ports, featuring long-standing trade links with the Middle East and Mesopotamia along the maritime silk route. Beypore is particularly noted for its traditional shipbuilding industry, specifically the construction of wooden vessels known as dhows or urus. While these ships were historically utilized by Arab merchants for fishing and trade, they are now frequently used as tourist vessels.
Beypore features a marina and a beach, and it served as a key point for regional infrastructure; the first railway line in Kerala was laid in 1861 from Tirur to Beypore. Additionally, some maritime historians suggest that Sumerian ships may have been constructed in the region.
