Sonipat is a planned industrial city and the administrative headquarters of the Sonipat district in the Indian state of Haryana. Located within the National Capital Region, the city is situated approximately 45 kilometres from New Delhi and lies about 214 kilometres southwest of Chandigarh, the state capital.
The Yamuna River flows along the eastern boundary of the city. Historically, the area was known by the name Swarnprastha.
