Gorakhpur is a city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is situated along the banks of the Rapti river within the Purvanchal region, approximately 272 kilometres east of the state capital, Lucknow.
The city serves as the administrative headquarters for the Gorakhpur district, the North Eastern Railway Zone, and the Gorakhpur division. It is home to several notable landmarks, including the Gorakhnath Math temple and an Indian Air Force station that has been operational since 1963.
Gorakhpur is also the site of Gita Press, which was established in 1926. The organization is recognized as the world's largest publisher of Hindu religious texts, including the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
