Godhra is a municipality located in the Panchmahal district of the Indian state of Gujarat. It serves as the administrative capital for the Panchmahal district.
The name of the city is derived from two words: "gou," which translates to "cow," and "dhara." Depending on pronunciation, "dharaa" typically refers to land or a feminine person that holds something, while "dhaaraa" means flow. Because the latter pronunciation is not widely used, the name Godhra is generally understood to mean the Land of the Cow.
