Ahmedabad, also spelled Amdavad, is a major city located in the Indian state of Gujarat. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the Ahmedabad district and functions as the seat of the Gujarat High Court. The city is situated near the banks of the Sabarmati River and is located approximately 25 km (16 mi) from Gandhinagar, which is known as its twin city and the capital of Gujarat.
Ahmedabad is the most populous city in Gujarat. With a population of 5,570,585, it ranks as the fifth-most populous city in India. The encompassing urban area has an estimated population of 8,854,444, making it the seventh-most populous urban area in the country.
