Silchar is a city in the state of Assam, India, serving as the headquarters of the Cachar district. Located approximately 343 kilometres southeast of Guwahati, it ranks as the second-largest city in Assam by both population and GDP. The city was established in 1832 by Captain Thomas Fisher, who moved the headquarters of Cachar from Janiganj to Silchar.
Historically known as a tea town, Silchar is home to the Cachar club, which served as a primary meeting point for tea planters. The city holds significant sporting and aviation milestones, being the site of the world's first polo club and the first competitive polo match. It was also the destination for the world's first all-women crew flight in 1985, operated by Air India from Kolkata.
The city is notably associated with the moniker "Island of Peace," a title bestowed upon it by former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
