Hajo is a historic town located in the hills northwest of Guwahati in the state of Assam, India. It serves as a significant religious meeting point for Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims due to the diverse pilgrimage sites situated across its various hills.
The area contains several notable sacred sites belonging to different faiths. For Hindus, Manikut Parbat features 10th-century temple ruins alongside an 11th- to 16th-century complex dedicated to Vaishnavism, as well as shrines for Shaivism and Shaktism. Buddhists from Bhutan and Tibet consider the region significant as a site where the Buddha died, with the Hayagriva temple in Hajo forming part of this sacred geography.
The town also holds importance for regional Muslims, who visit the Mughal-era Poa-Mecca shrine located on another hill. This site contains the 17th-century tomb of Giyasuddin Aulia.
