Guwahati, formerly known as Gauhati, is the largest city in the Indian state of Assam and serves as the primary metropolis of northeastern India. Situated on the south bank of the Brahmaputra River, it is characterized by its riverine port and surrounding hills. The city is frequently referred to as the "gateway to North East India" and is recognized as one of the fastest-growing urban centers in the country.
