Kurnool is a city located in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra river. It serves as the district headquarters for the Kurnool district and was historically significant as the capital of Andhra State from 1953 to 1956. The city is frequently referred to as "The Gateway of Rayalaseema."
While the area has been inhabited for thousands of years, modern Kurnool was established in the 16th century CE with the construction of the Konda Reddy Fort. According to the 2011 census, it is the fifth most populous city in the state, with a population of 425,214. The region is also known for diamond hunting, as diamonds can be found in barren land once topsoil is washed away by monsoon rains.
